Domain Name Questions

What is a domain name?
A domain name enables other internet users to find you on the world wide web. Your domain name is your internet web address. The domain provides a simple way for people and the computers they use to find your web site. Like home/office addresses and telephone numbers, each domain name is unique.

Why do I need a domain name?
Registering a suitable domain name is very important. It is the equivalent of registering a company name for the Internet. Anyone thinking about establishing a web presence needs to register a domain name first. You don't have to use it right away, but you can reserve it for your future use since your ideal domain may be taken in the future.

Just like your trade name, logo, or brand name, your domain name is a powerful marketing tool. It should be something customers and businesses can recognise and associate with your business.

A domain name is a powerful marketing tool. Your can promote your domain name on your business cards, letterheads and marketing material. Your domain name is portable. It is independent of your ISP, hence your web address and e-mail will remain constant with you wherever in the world you may venture.

Once your domain name is secured you are also able to use it as your web site address (eg www.smallbusiness.com.au) so even if you are not ready to launch a web site for your business you can ensure that your business name is secured as a web site address.

Registering your own domain name also means when you purchase hosting you can use personalised email addresses, e.g. you@smallbusiness.com.au. A personalized email address is easier to remember, and presents a professional image.

How can I choose the best possible domain name?
Because your domain name will represent your business, you should make sure that the name you choose is reflective of either your business name, geographical location or the industry in which you market your products or services.

What registration rules do I need to satisfy?
International Domains
There are no restrictions on who can register international .com .net .org .biz or .info domains. Domains can be registered by any individuals or companies on a first come first served basis as long as you are not infringing on any trademarks .

Australian Domains
In 2002 the Australian domain rules were significantly relaxed. Domain names can still be registered on the basis they are derived from a registered business name or registered company however other domains may now also be registered. The new policy has a criteria "close and substantial connection". This means that domain names that are related to your business may also be registered.

Examples include:
- The name of your product
- A service that you offer
- A profession that you practice
- A venue that you operate
- An event that you hold

The specific eligibility and allocation rules that apply to each of the different domain extensions should be read to fully understand the requirements to register each domain:

  - .com.au
  - .net.au
  - .org.au
  - .asn.au
  - .id.au

How do I know if my desired domain name is still available?
Just go to our domain search form, enter the domain you wish to register and our search engine will search the appropriate registry database to see if the domain name is available or not.

What if the domain I want is taken?
Your first choice for a domain name may already be taken. If you have trouble finding the domain you want, try using hypens eg. my-company.com.au instead of mycompany.com.au. You can also try different extensions or use our domain name wizard which will give you alternate domain names that are available for registration.

How long does the registration process take?
International Domains
.com .net .org .biz .and info domain name registrations take place in real time. Therefore, in less than one (1) hour your registration is processed, approved and entered into the registry database.
Australian Domains
Due to the strict elegibility criteria and rules for allocating .au domains, new registrations are manually processed during business hours and may take up to three (3) hours for approval. When will my domain name be active?
Once your domain name has been registered, it usually takes between twelve (12) and seventy two (72) hours before it is active over the Internet. In some extreme cases it can be take as long as one (1) week. This delay is caused by the fact that all internet service and internet access providers in Australia and around the world must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect your domain name's new server location. This process is called propagation.

Can you please hold a domain before I make up my mind?
We can not 'hold' or 'reserve' any domains. This is why we always suggest that it is best to wait until business names, company names or trademarks have been approved before registering the equivilant domain name if there are any doubts in the registrants mind.

I no longer want the domain name I registered. Can I get a refund?
No. As per our terms and conditions, all domain sales are final and refunds will not be issued. Once a registration has completed, you are allocated the name for the time you purchased it for (eg: 1 or 2 yrs). This is a standard practice in the domain name industry because the registrar does not give Hosting Buzz a refund for the domain name we registered on your behalf. However, when the registration period is over you can choose not to renew the domain to ensure you do not incur any further charges.

What happens if I made an error with the spelling of my domain name?
We are very sorry but changes can not be made to your domain after it has been registered and refunds are not available. This is why we suggest to double and triple check your domain before placing an order.

Can you register my domain if I host my site elsewhere?
Yes. When we register your domain you are the owner, you have full control over the domain and can delegate the domain to any web hosting company of your choice.

Can I renew/transfer my domain through Hosting Buzz?
Yes. If you have already registered your domain name elsewhere, Hosting Buzz will try to assist you in transferring your domain to us. The transfer process depends on the registrar with whom you registered your domain name. Please email our support team who will assist you in this process.

Can someone else register my domain name after I registered it?
It is not possible for someone else to register the exact same domain name you have registered because the availability of domain names is verified through a central registry. The central registry prevents a domain name that is successfully registered from being allocated to another person or entity. However, if you fail to renew the domain after the first licence period it can be registered by another person or entity.

What happens to my domain after the initial registration period?
Prior to the expiry of your initial registration period you will be sent a renewal invoice which will give you information on how to renew your domain for a further licence period. As long as you still meet the relevant eligibility requirements and pay the renewal charges you do not have to worry about "losing" your domain name to another person or entity.

What will happen to my domain if I do not renew?
If you choose not to renew your domain name, the address will become available to be registered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What if I need help and support with my domain name?
Please contact Hosting Buzz if you need any assitance with your domain name. We offer domain name support via email and over the phone. Most inquiries are best dealt with via email which will be answered in the order they are received. Typically, you will receive an email answer within two to four hours.

When my domain name is registered, who owns the domain name?
As the registrant, you will have the licence for the domain name. Hosting Buzz only acts as an intermediary and registers the domain name on your behalf and provides parking and/or hosting of your domain name on our nameservers. You are listed as the registrant, administrative and technical contact.

Does Hosting Buzz charge to transfer away to another provider?
No. Hosting Buz does not have any hidden fees. It is your decision to transfer away and we do not charge you for doing it.

Will my name and contact information be publicly available?
Yes. Information about who is responsible for domain names is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. The registrar will make this information available to the public on a "Whois" site.

There is the option with .com .net .org .biz .info domains ONLY for $11 a year you can have your domain details listed as private meaning that people can not see who the owner of the domain is.

Why register more than one domain name?
Registering more than one domain name has a number of advantages.

If you register your business name (eg brisbaneplumber.com.au) you can also register other names that people may search for you under. In the above example you may fix taps, so you might register fixtaps.com.au as well.

Many web sites employ multiple domain names so they can direct users that are interested in a particular product straight to the page about that product in their main web site.

Protect your brand on the Internet: If you register aussiebeer.com.au you should also register aussiebeer.com.

The subtle difference is not always obvious to internet users, don't have your competitor getting traffic that should be destined for your web site!
